TDC has entered into partnership with US-based iBasis in the market for international telephony.
The partnership means that, for the next five years, TDC will buy all its international traffic outside the Nordic countries through iBasis, a subsidiary of Dutch KPN. Similarly, TDC will be the preferred provider of telephony in the Nordic countries to iBasis.
"Liberalisation in primarily Europe and increasing phone traffic via the Internet make it necessary to join forces to achieve efficiencies of scale. We are very pleased to have concluded this agreement with one of the world's top-five players in this area - an agreement which will also ensure increased traffic in TDC's Nordic network," says Ole Hvelplund, Senior Vice President, TDC Wholesale.
In practice, the agreement means that TDC goes from having some 130 international partners to having only one. At the same time, it means that TDC is shutting down a department with 27 employees who, until today, have been tasked with buying and selling call minutes in the international market. These employees will be offered other jobs within TDC.
As part of the agreement, activities in TDC's American subsidiary, TDC Carrier Services USA, Inc., including its four American employees, will be transferred to iBasis.
The agreement comes into force once it has been formally approved by the competition authorities.
